The Old World Had Many Great Leaders. Alexander The Great, Essays

The old world had numerous incredible pioneers. Alexander the Great, Hannibal and even Julius Caesar met with battle on their ascent to power. Maybe Genghis Khan was the most huge of all these rulers. To demonstrate that Genghis Khan was the best ruler, we should go back to the earliest reference point of his reality. We should inspect such issues as; Genghis?s battle for power/how his life as a youngster would influence his standard, his own and military accomplishments and his successes. They were disregarded for a long time to think about themselves. All through these years, his family met numerous difficulties, for example, lack of food also, lack of cash. They need everything that is acceptable and nothing that is terrible. Genghis realized he was unable to guarantee this so all things considered he promised to share both the sweet and the severe of life. Genghis would not like to wind up being harmed like his dad so all things being equal he made collusions, what's more, assaulted any individual who represented a genuine danger. Genghis assumed the extraordinary errand of overcoming the entirety of china and joining together it under a solitary ruler. Genghis started his ambush on China by assaulting a northwest realm

Factors affecting cooling rate Essay Example

Components influencing cooling rate Essay Example Elements influencing cooling rate Paper Elements influencing cooling rate Paper Warmth vitality is directed from the hot end to the virus end. It is moved from molecule to iota. At the hot end the molecules are vibrating a great deal. The vibration is steadily passed along to different molecules as they crash into one another. This occurs in all substances, however in a metal a bonus occurs. A metal has some free-moving electrons. These free-electrons can go through the metal, moving the vitality all the more rapidly. Convection: The exchange of vitality, by the developments of particles just in fluids and gases Radiation: Vitality from the Sun contacts us in the wake of going through space at the speed of light. At the point when this hits an article, some of it is taken in or assimilated. This causes the atoms to vibrate more thus the item more sultry. Articles take in and take and give out vitality as radiation constantly. Various articles give out various measures of radiation relying upon their temperature and their surface. Isaac Newton expressed that the rate at which a warm item cools is around relative to the temperature distinction between the temperature of the warm article and the temperature of its environmental factors. This is a commonplace cooling rate diagram. Components that influence the cooling pace of a fluid: Diverse estimated containers. Measuring glasses produced using various materials and hues. Conduction. Radiation. Dissipation. Infrared Waves. 1.) Different estimated measuring glasses. Convection can just happen in gases and fluids. Convection can't occur in a strong in light of the fact that particles have prohibitive development. In a huge measuring glass, there is a bigger territory for the fluid to move warmth to while in a little container, there is a littler zone for the fluid to move warmth to so less warmth will be moved. 2.) Beakers produced using various materials and hues. 3.) Conduction of Heat. Conduction of warmth is where vibrating particles give their extra active vitality to neighboring particles. 4.) Radiation. 5.) Evaporation. At the point when a fluid underneath its breaking point changes into a gas, this is called vanishing. It happens in light of the fact that a few particles in the fluid move quicker than others. The quicker ones close to the surface have enough vitality to get away to frame a gas. 6.) Infrared. Vitality to warm us up movements from the Sun at the speed of light, stick like the light beams. The beams which cause the most warming are called infrared waves. All items transmit some infrared as a result of the movement of their iotas or atoms. Most emanate a wide scope of frequencies. As an item warms up, it emanates an ever increasing number of infrared and shorter frequencies. Point: To examine how the surface region of a container influences the cooling pace of a fluid. Expectation: I anticipate that the greater the container, the less time it will take for the fluid to chill off. This is on the grounds that gases and fluids are increasingly subject to move around which permits them to move heat effectively by convection. Convection can't occur in solids in light of the fact that the particles have prohibitive development. In a greater container, the particles have a bigger territory to move warmth to while in a littler measuring glass water particles have less zone to move around in so less warmth would be moved. We realize that in the event that anything hot is poured it will in the long run chill off. This procedure is quick from the outset, at that point after a significant stretch of time, the temperature of the fluid arrives at room temperature. These temperature varieties for cooling objects were summed up by Isaac Newton. He expressed that the rate at which a warm article cools is around corresponding to the temperature contrast between the temperature of the warm item and the temperature of its environmental factors. Reasonable Test: Start temperature: Ensure that the underlying temperature perusing of the water is consistently 70à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½C for all investigations. This is to ensure that there is no temperature variety in the beginning temperature. It will be considered that there will be a à ¯Ã¢ ¿Ã¢ ½0.5% exactness level of this perusing. Time: Ensure that the temperature readings are recorded as precisely as conceivable to sixty seconds for each analysis utilizing an advanced stopwatch. Radiation: Heat Radiation goes through straightforward material, for example, glass. Accordingly wrap a layer of aluminum foil around the measuring utencil. Convection: Convection happens when particles move from the more smoking area to the cooler district. To guarantee that no warmth is lost because of this spot a protecting material (fleece) around the measuring glass. Vanishing: When a fluid dissipates, quicker particles escape from its surface to frame a gas. Nonetheless, except if the gas is expelled, a portion of the particles will come back to the fluid. Spot a protecting material (wood) that fits into the top piece of the measuring utencil to decrease dissipation. Room Temperature: While I complete the investigation I will ensure that the room temperature is consistently a similar utilizing a thermometer with a 0.5% precision level.

Bukowski poem †a smile to remember Essay

Investigation A memorable grin Charles Bukowski The sonnet is actually a short tale about a common family with shocking issues. The offspring of the mother and the dad, who are referenced in the sonnet, is the storyteller. The possible situation is that the youngster in the sonnet speaks to Charles Bukowski’s adolescence. In the principal lines of the story, it is referenced that the family has goldfish. We find out about a kid, whose mother continues advising him to be glad, despite the fact that she has a hopeless life as a result of his crazy and harsh dad, who beats her much of the time. One day the goldfish passes on and his dad, being the torpid man he is, tosses the goldfish to the feline, yet surprisingly, Henry’s mother just grins. The initial introduction you get when you see the title of the sonnet is this must be a ‘feel-good’-or ‘love’-sonnet. In the principal line, the word ‘goldfish’ is referenced. A guiltless picture most perusers can identify with. The equivalent goes for the line â€Å"my mother, continually grinning, needing all of us to be happy†. Once more, to the peruser this is something worth being thankful for. Tragically, that isn't the situation. The vast majority concur that experiencing life upbeat, is something we as a whole attempt to accomplish. The fifth line peruses â€Å"and she was correct: it’s better to be upbeat if you†. At that point the artist accomplishes something surprising. The line stops after â€Å"you†, while the following line, just incorporates single word; â€Å"can†. Bukowski made this word a line without anyone else to cause the peruser to comprehend the hint of devastation in the family, since they most likely can't carry on with the glad, all around flawless life. By composing it along these lines, Bukowski leave it to the peruser to choose if the mother and the kid are upbeat. In any case, unmistakably the Mother recognizes that the kid is in certainty forever discontent, since he â€Å"never smiles† as she comments later. Line 10-11, â€Å"raging inside his 6-foot-two casing since he couldn’t comprehend what was assaulting him from within†. We know from prior, that Bukowski’s adolescence was horrendously fierce and his dad was oppressive to hisâ mother and him, however in this sonnet Bukowski decide to look past this and attempts to comprehend why his dad was harsh. In this line, the peruser faculties promptly that something isn't right with the dad and that he is battling his own evil presences. Is it psychological sickness, substance misuse or would he say he is only a man with disposition? Bukowski’s mother turns into the focal point of the verse; â€Å"my mother, poor fish, needing to be cheerful, beaten a few times each week, advising me to be glad: ‘Henry, grin! Why don’t you ever smile?† Instead of goldfish swimming in a bowl, the goldfish currently represent the mother (â€Å"poor fish†) who attempts to show bliss despite the fact that sh e experiences brutality and lives in torment. Notwithstanding, distress can't be covered up, even the kid realizes that her satisfaction isn't genuine. As the creator express it â€Å"it was the saddest grin I ever saw†. In the last verse the goldfish kicks the bucket. The peruser can unmistakably imagine the dead fish â€Å"they drifted on the water on their side, their eyes still open†. To come back to the image of the fish being the mother, the reader’s perspective presently gets totally flipped around. It isn't as basic as it looked †the sonnet isn't about maltreatment. It is about a fatigued lady who attempted to keep a much increasingly broken family together. She had faith in the beneficial things throughout everyday life and grinned through her agony trying to raise an asylum towards the appalling reality she is restricted to. Until one day, when the little piece of her, despite everything attempting to battle, passed on and was tossed to the feline: By then she just stands there, as yet grinning. Maybe she understands that alleviation will likewise go to her sometime in the not so distant future; when passing shut down her hopeless life and she can at long last quit imagin ing that life is a cheerful spot.

Manifestations of Love and Longing in the World of Tom Ripley. - Literature Essay Samples

In the book The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, we are introduced to one of the most fascinating and puzzling characters in modern literature; Tom Ripley. Tom Ripley is a character who is both contradictory and simple in his desires. He wants the approval and love from a relationship with Dickie, but we question whether he would be able to feel and return these same feelings. He is always on the move, always chasing something better – a desire which is often mirrored through his travels and his constant craving to visit the mythical cities of old – and culminates with his aspiration to reach the heroic Greek Islands. A careful reader, perhaps, can uncover how Tom Ripley’s sense of longing and love for a lifestyle ordinarily out of his reach, drives the entirety of the novel. We see the roots of Ripley’s longing for a new life, fresh beginnings, and material possessions manifest themselves in the very first chapter. When discussing Dickie’s age with Mr. Greenleaf, we get to delve into the inner workings of Ripley’s mind. Ripley seems to despise his status, and where he is at in life, as seen when he lists some of his unfortunate – and downright disturbing circumstances when comparing himself to Dickie; â€Å"living from week to week. No bank account. Dodging cops now for the first time in his life.† (Highsmith, 6). The list is written in snappishly short sentences, which suggests a growing sense of anger and frustration over his situation in life. Eric Targan believes this dissatisfaction sprung from childhood, as he was orphaned, but also verbally abused by his aunt. (Targan, 310). When recounting his memory of Dickie Greenleaf, Tom describes him as being pleasing in his appearance – perhaps as more handsome tha n he was. This marks the beginning of Tom idealizing and romanticizing Dickie, a running habit throughout the novel – even once Tom has killed Dickie. Particularly, Tom emphasizes Dickie’s aura of luck, such as when he describes Dickie’s â€Å"happy-go-lucky face† (Highsmith, 6), this is significant when we observe that this is a trait that Tom believes to be practically void in himself. Whereas Tom’s longing for a clean slate made him feel miserable when considering his dreary situation in Chapter One, it changes his world view to one full of excitement and possibilities when he is contemplating his future in Europe as he is sailing on the ship. Tom explores possible career options for after he has finished with Dickie, and now uses long, expansive sentences, complete with explanation marks, and numerous commas to suggest his new openness to possibilities – creating a feeling that anything could happen. Tom’s longing to transcend his class is obvious in the way he romanticises Europe. Jacqui Miller believes this stems from a belief that â€Å"Europe is the place of high-culture and an unearned income, leisure-class lifestyle†. Establishing from the outset Tom’s longing for a comfortably luxurious lifestyle and an elevated status. Upon arriving in Italy, we turn to the question of whether Tom feels any love for Dickie, and whether it has an outcome of what he will do in the rest of the novel. Upon first meeting Dickie, Tom is desperate for his approval, as he admits that it is what â€Å"he wanted more than anything else in the world† (Highsmith, 40). From this line, it becomes clear that whether Tom loves Dickie, that Dickie has become the temporary centre of his world. This is seen best in all the lengths that Tom goes to, to entertain Dickie. An example of this is when he is listing his many talents to Dickie. Tom sneaks in foreshadowing for observant r eaders, when he intersperses his talents that he will be utilizing to conceal the murders he will commit. But he also makes a reference to what he is doing in that immediate moment, when he says that he can â€Å"do a one-man show in a nightclub in case the regular entertainer’s sick.† (Highsmith, 45). This is a rewording of Tom’s current situation, as he was required to spontaneously entertain Dickie himself, when no other satisfactory person could be found. It also reflects Tom’s current world-view; he is not only entertaining Dickie, but is also grasping new opportunities as they arise, and creating an act as he goes along. This ‘one-man’ show is replicated later in Tom’s disturbing imitation of Dickie, in which he pretends to kill Marge. The beginning of the passage hints at Tom’s underlying feelings towards Dickie. He copies the strange â€Å"higher pitch† and â€Å"little growl† of Dickie’s voice that only a lover or a con-man would detect, and is able to link these changes to Dickie’s moods – showing how sensitive and close towards Dickie that Tom feels. He then pretends to strangle Marge, while saying â€Å"You were interfering between Tom and me – No, not that! But there is a bond between us!† (Highsmith, 61) This last quote is interesting, as by ‘that’ we can assume that Tom means a sexual relationship between him and Dickie, which he disputes, but he still insists upon a bond between them. An explanation for what this ‘bond’ might be – if not sexual – is that Tom sees Dickie as being his second identity – his better half – who has the life he never had. Which brings us to the question; for how long did Tom know that he was going to kill Dickie, beforehand? Was he originally copying Dickie’s mannerisms and observing his habits with the overall intention to become him? Edward A Shannon seems to think that Tom treated almost like a pleasurable activity – pretending to be someone he’s not when he points out that Tom â€Å"delights in imitating Dickie long before he decides to kill him.† (Shannon, 23). This theory on their ‘bond’ as Tom sees it, is reinforced when we consider the second part of the passage; Tom seems a lot more calm and devoid of passion as he carefully considers how his appearance is similar to Dickie’s. He observes that if he tweaks small features about himself (like his hair) that he can easily merge into his better alter-ego. Tom so much as says this when he is walking around Paris after he has killed Dickie, and observes that â€Å"he had two people to take care of† (Highsmith, 104) as if he and Dickie are just opposite sides of the same coin. Tom focuses on the finer aspects of life, such as when he and Dickie are in Cannes and he mentions that he would have been willing to  "have paid whatever it cost at the best hotel on the ocean front† (Highsmith, 75). This is interpreted as being Tom’s desire to ‘live well’ and with security, while enjoying Europe in the way he thinks it is supposed to be enjoyed. Tom’s fascination with objects is revisited when he eyes Dickie’s rings while he contemplates killing him on the train. We already know what Dickie’s rings look like from when Tom initially notices them upon first meeting Dickie. This preoccupation with Dickie’s rings – which is carried on throughout the entire novel – is central because it seems to be a label or a signifier of Dickie’s privilege and upper-class status – something that Tom cannot buy, but ultimately longs for, and wishes to steal. Targan perceives that Dickie’s rings possess his initials, and by wearing them, Tom thinks that he can inhabit Dickie’s being (Targan, 311). We know that Dickie often likes to dress poorer than he really is, such as when he wears soiled pants, or simple â€Å"terracotta† shirts, but it is these rings that he never takes off that reminds everybody around him – and Dickie himself – of his true station in life. On the train ride back to Mongibello after killing Dickie, Tom admits he is â€Å"happy, content, and utterly confident, as he had never been before in his life.† (Highsmith, 86) and this is largely because of the prospect of Dickie’s lifestyle and unlimited material possessions spread out before him. He seems hyperaware of the tactility and appearance of objects, such as when he caresses the sheets and blankets and marvels at them. This gives us an insight into what Tom craves and loves: material possessions, as they are what makes him truly happy. He describes Dickie’s clothes and accessories lovingly, even casually mentioning his love for them; â€Å"they were all his and he loved them all† (Highsmith, 97). This sentence could be understood as being a frivolous statement made by Tom in the moment, but throughout the passage Tom takes the time to gloss over the little details that make them a part of Dickie such as the â€Å"sagging pockets† of D ickie’s sweater, and the â€Å"well-worn alligator wallet from Gucci’s† (Highsmith, 97). As Shannon points out, Tom seems to be of the belief that â€Å"Dickie is his clothes† (Shannon, 24) and just by donning his clothes can Tom transform into Dickie. A lot of the book is defined by how Tom has an internal longing to transcend his class and live the life he feels like he deserves, and he often recreates this for himself through his focus on possessions. Tom loves the idea of being Dickie, so when he is forced to send Dickie’s possessions to storage, he is devastated at the thought of becoming Tom Ripley again. He compares it to â€Å"putting on a shabby suit of clothes†¦. That had not been very good to begin with.† (Highsmith, 148) this highlights his deep dissatisfaction with his natural identity, and when paired with the fact that he cries over Dickie’s clothes, suggests that Tom feels as if Dickie as a part of him, the part t hat he longs to be. As was mentioned before, Tom does not only love possessions, but he loves the status and lifestyle that Dickie’s position and money affords him. Even after being questioned by officers in Venice, he is still eager enough to plan the luxurious meal he plans to eat. Similar to when he is describing possessions, he describes luxury in general in lavish detail, emphasising â€Å"creamy sauce over delicate pasta† showing that Tom makes an effort to make sure he savours and enjoys. Upon first arriving in Paris, Tom seems to be in love with how ‘chic’ and sophisticated it is and he wishes to let â€Å"the atmosphere seep in slowly,† (Highsmith, 97) In this sense, Tom hopes to be influenced by Paris itself, and to absorb the old-world sophistication and class into himself. Throughout the book, we are aware of Tom’s hedonistic love for possessions and luxury, but it is not until the end of the novel does he directly address his fee lings towards them. For Tom, possessions gave a person a sense of self-worth, security, and the freedom to live life on their own terms. Throughout the passage, we get the impression that this is the sincerest Tom has ever been throughout the novel, and he unabashedly admits that he loves his possessions’ â€Å"quality, and the love that cherished the quality.† (Highsmith, 193). Perhaps what this reflection reveals is that Tom loves himself most of all, in the sense that he holds most dear the things that allow himself to live a life of ease and which please him and make him happy. It is normal to love the things that make a person happy, for most people it is our relationships with others. But Tom Ripley is not most people, instead, he forms relationships with objects. He is ecstatic when he gains access to them, cries when they are separated, and cherishes them above all. In the last chapter where Tom anticipates his journey to the Greek Islands, do we see that travel is transformational in Tom’s eyes. He exhibits the desire to arrive â€Å"as a living, breathing, courageous individual.† (Highsmith, 215) and draws on the ‘heroic’ history of the Greek Islands by quoting The Odyssey when he imagines the ‘wine-dark sea’. Is Tom comparing his journey to The Odyssey, and himself to Odysseus? Perhaps, in the sense that The Odyssey was a journey fraught with dangers and obstacles, and that Odysseus was only able to save himself through his ingenious use of cunning, wit, and disguises. Targan likens Tom to being a type of â€Å"shapeshifter† (Targan, 311) where he conforms and fits into whatever ideal that fits his fancy. Where it had once been the easy glamour of Dickie, we see him transform into the brave Odysseus in front of our eyes. From the outside, Tom can be viewed as the quintessential self-made American male. But beneath the picture-perfect veneer of Thomas Ripley, we discover a man shaped by his consuming hate of his birth-station, who longs for a better life and elevated status so desperately that he is prepared to kill for it. We witness a man who is devoid of any meaningful relationships, but instead fills his days with marvelling over collected possessions and experiences that he loves and adores. When we watch him prepare to shape a new destiny for himself at the closing of the book, we recognize a man whose obsession with materiality and status is so powerful that it can shape not only his world view, but his perception of his identity and himself.

While I found that while some patients ignored treatment and refused to make any dietary changes, the majority of the patients I interviewed were well-informed and actively managing diabetes in their everyday life. Background on Diabetes: Throughout the whole of the United Kingdom, between 2 and 3 of every 100 people have a†¦show more content†¦Accompanying genetics, environmental factors, such as lack of exercise and obesity, play major roles in causing type II diabetes. Why do we treat diabetes? There are a number of downstream events associated with abnormal blood glucose levels. If glucose levels are managed properly, the complications associated diabetes can be controlled, and sometimes completely prevented. The main problem with having more than the normal amount of glucose circulating in the blood stream is the effect that excess glucose can have on both large and small blood vessels (DTC, 2004). Micro-vascular and macro-vascular problems associated with diabetes can be seen in the heart, eyes, kidney, legs and feet. Diabetic patients are twice as likely to suffer from a mycocardial infaraction, twenty-five times more likely to suffer blindness, and seventeen times more likely to suffer kidney failure compared to a non-diabetic (DTC, 2004). Because of great number of risks associated with abnormal blood glucose levels, diabetes is aggressively treated to improve the quality of life and prevent complications in patients. Diabetes can be treated in three basic ways: by diet, by diet in conjunction with tablets, or diet in conjunction with insulin. Diet serves as an initial control for non-urgent patients. If a person’s diet will have a major effect on glycaemic control, it does so reasonably quickly, within a few weeks of changingShow MoreRelatedCurrent Epidemiology of Diabetes in the Uk4303 Words   |  18 PagesDiabetes- current epidemiology and measuring variables at a local level Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) is not classed as single disorder as it represents a series of conditions associated with high blood sugar which are cased in turn by defects in insulin secretion or the effectiveness of insulin or both. Social Biases free essay sample

Dr. Deirdre Teaford Abstract People behave differently toward other culture and groups and discriminate in many forms of social bias. These biases can impact harshly an individuals career and social life. Discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes can influence adversely an individuals quality of life. The concept is more prevalent in society that most people realize. This problem could be unfavorable to group cohesion, cooperation, and the success of society. Humans prefer to go with the flow of a crowd. When an idea is chosen by the masses (an entire nations or a small group), the individualized brain enters a kind of hive mind mentality. This causes social norms and behaviors to propagate among the individuals regardless of the evidence in support. This type of social bias is built with the desire to conform or fit in. Social biases have been a barrier humans have experienced from generation to generation. They take short cuts to make sense of the world. Humans have become fallible and has been subjected to their many flaws by making errors in Judgment, memory, and social attribution. Social psychologists have claimed these biases can be eliminated if the individuals have the motivation and capacity to change their attitude. According to Fiske (2010), Some people think bias is a thing of the past, and others think it is a real and present danger that targets diverse social groups (p. 28). Moreover, there are subtle and obvious misunderstandings among groups of individuals that affects the bias of people in heir lives, but strategies for change are possible (Fiske, 2010). In this analysis, the concept of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination will be defined. In the same aspect, the analysis will describe the differences between blatant and subtle bias while identifyi ng some common biases that may affect the lives of individuals and Stereotyping, and Discrimination Gender and ethnic stereotypes are inevitable. In the context of affirmative action, the inevitability has played an important practical implication. One arguments against affirmative action is that employers and educational administrators should be ender-blind and colorblind in their hiring and recruiting process (Stewart, Weeks, Lupfer, 2003). Individuals are often hurt by discriminatory and prejudicial behaviors and attitudes. The current laws cannot halt prejudicial or stereotyping attitudes, but they can address instances of discrimination. Discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice are somewhat similar, but they are very different. Prejudice The operational definition involves reacting fervently to an individual on the basis of ones feelings about the group (Fiske, 2010). It is a belief that formulated without considering the facts. It is also an unwarranted or negative attitude toward a person based on his or her association of a social group. Stereotyping The operational definition entails an individuals cognitive associations and expectations about a group. These expectations will encompass the beliefs about the characteristics of a group (Fiske, 2010). Moreover, it is an indiscriminate belief about a class of people or particular group. Advantage: It allows the individual to respond hastily to certain situations because he or she may had a related experience. Disadvantage: It will make us ignore the differences between people. Discrimination The operational definition involves acting on the basis of ones prejudices and stereotypes, rebuffing equality of treatment that individuals wish to have (Fiske, 2010). Moreover, it is the negative behavior, or actions toward a group of people or individual on the basis of social/race/gender class. In this context, discrimination can be either blatant or subtle. Subtle and Blatant Bias In the last two decades, there is no doubt that women have made strides in the fight for equality. Many can recognize that women have overcome the many prejudices against their participation in the workforce (Earnshaw, 1993). In our society, blatant bias is being replaced by subtle bias to decrease the broad- mindedness for obviously biased behavior. Subtle bias is also acknowledged as modern prejudice. This does not mean that women do not get discriminated at work even though they have achieved equality of opportunity (Earnshaw, 1993). The first generation bias was more hostile towards women who needed to be in home with the children. On this second generation bias, for example, women may get more narrative praise than the male co-workers but low rating point related to Job performance (Earnshaw, 1993). Subtle Bias This particular modern bias is indirect and is manifested by withholding respect and sympathy. It is ambiguous and sometimes involves positive and hostile feelings that can cause extreme responses (Fiske, 2010). Blatant Bias This old-fashioned bias ensues as a result of threats to the struggle for positive group identity. They include segregation, physical attack, extermination, avoidance, opinion clearly in regard to a particular individual or group. Impact of Social Bias The lives of individuals can be influenced by social biases. Negative outcomes like neglect, hostile environment, or avoidance may be created by discrimination. When a biased individual interacts with an outgroup members, the expressed behavior of the individual will solicit negative and ill attitudes. Prejudice will influence the individuals lives with instances of ageism, sexism, and racism that will affect their career and social life. According to Vaish, Grossman, and Woodward (2008), When adults display a negative bias across an array of psychological situations, they will use the negative information instead of the positive one (p. 383). Moreover, the negativity bias may serves as an evolutionary adaptive purpose of helping individuals afely explore and examine the environment to avoid harmful situations (Vaish et. al. , 2008). Two Strategies to Overcome Social Biases There are several strategies to minimize social biases, such as affirmative action, and equal opportunity laws. The majority of these strategies involve constant intergroup contact. The key term for a biased individual is change. Old habits die hard but and individual can break those habits. According to Fiske (2010), Intergroup contact and mutual differentiation are two possible strategies to minimize the bias. Intergroup Contact These are interactions between members of different social groups. During the contact, there is equal status in the groups, there are common goals, and there is no competition but cooperation. They are not easy to meet, but they make complete sense (Fiske, 2010). Mutual Differentiation In this context, mutual differentiation is important for two reasons: (1) People retain awareness of individuals social identity in the contact situation, and (2) Individuals seem typical in the sense that they represent their own groups (Fiske, 2010). In Conclusion The motivation of change is the key to steer away from social biases. The bias will be the individuals preference toward a peculiar way of viewing or thinking omething. This behavior will be influenced by a certain prejudice.
